Three CUs Named to Freep Top Workplaces List for Fifth Year in a Row

A trio of credit unions recently joined an elite group – they are among the 10 Michigan employers that have been named to The Detroit Free Press Top Workplaces list for five consecutive years.

DFCU Financial, Michigan First CU and Genisys CU were recognized as some of the state’s top employers. Three other credit unions also made this year’s list: MSUFCU, CASE CU and E&A CU.

The article opens with a story about DFCU where all of the employees are eligible for a bonus and no one gets an executive assistant or a reserved parking space.

DFCU was recognized for its focus on employee development. The credit union has four on-site trainers who travel to the credit union's 23 branches. Employees at its branches and call centers, even those who work part-time, enroll in a skills block program that enables them to map out clearly defined paths for their careers.

"We're very informal," DFCU CEO and President Mark Shobe said. "We're not political or hierarchal. We're in it together."

The Top Workplace winners share some similarities, the newspaper said. All but two are service companies. The majority of these employers have been in business for decades, including two since the 1880s. And most of them are midsize businesses.
