A group from Chippewa County CU won the Best Dressed Group award at the U.P. Chapter’s vendor trade show.
The U.P. Chapter Annual Meeting was at a new venue, the Island Casino and Resort in Harris. The chapter leadership decided to try the new convention center, moving after being hosted in Sault Ste. Marie for 12 years. The Island, located 17 miles west of Escanaba, is more centrally located within the Upper Peninsula.
Sponsor money from CUNA Mutual Group, AAA Insurance, CU Auto Club and the Salus Group supplemented the weekend of events in order to keep the registration price down to $60 per attendee.
The weekend schedule started with a Friday luncheon hosted by MCUL for executive staff from the attending credit unions. MCUL & Affiliates CEO David Adams provided an update on issues, initiatives and solutions that the league is working on, as well as a preview of the new “Own Your Money” advertisements. Later in the afternoon, Ed Swanson from Lending Solutions Consulting presented to board members the topic of “Strategic Planning.”
The Island rolled out the red carpet for the “Famous Characters and People” vendor trade show. The room, decorated with black, red, shiny gold and silver, held 34 vendors who sponsored the excellent food and beverages for more than 500 attendees. The annual meeting committee donated $300 to charities of the winner’s choice for the best-dressed contests.
Saturday morning kicked off with a breakfast buffet in the Firekeeper’s Restaurant within the casino complex. Ron Tatro from Elder Law of Michigan, presented the topic of “Elder Mistreatment” for an audience of credit union employees. The others attended the Chapter Annual Business Meeting in the casino showroom.

At the business meeting Congressman Dan Benishek shared some views and answered questions from the audience. Awards were presented to Norway Community CU and Delta County CU for exceeding PAC funding goals. The chapter also presented awards to Ron Nelson from Peninsula FCU for the U.P. Chapter Person of the Year and Pam Bottkol from Menominee County FCU for the U.P. Chapter Distinguished Service Award.
The Saturday afternoon education sessions were presented by Ed Swanson, on the topic of “Lending & Risk Based Pricing,” Ron Tatro, on “Elder Financial Exploitation” and Tom Cvinar from Financial Standards Group on Bank Secrecy Act training for board members.
At Saturday evening's banquet, the Island staff served a combo plate of chicken and beef to 504 credit union guests. Once again the Island staff gave the attendees the red carpet treatment with excellent food, décor and friendly service. That evening a total of $2,024 was raised for the PAC, $840 for the State PAC and $1184 for the Federal PAC. The evening concluded with a short program and a prize drawing.
The weekend of events concluded with a Sunday morning buffet.
