U.S. Sen. Gary Peters (D-Mich.)
In the afternoon, MCUL and the full Hike the Hill contingent capped off a success-
ful 2019 event by meeting with U.S. Sen. Gary Peters. He reaffi rmed his ongoing
and strong support for credit unions’ not-for-profi t tax status and discussed his
efforts on cyber security as the ranking member of the U.S. Senate Committee on
Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs. Peters asserted his proud support
for our industry’s efforts on securing a safe harbor for banking cannabis-related
businesses and he expressed a willingness to work with both sides of the aisle to
bring the issue to fruition in the Senate. He also touched on his willingness to sup-
port efforts to reform the Bank Secrecy Act and bring much-needed changes to the
law, as well as looking at the CECL “stop and study” bill. The full group expressed
its sincere appreciation to the senator for his staunch and continuous support for
our industry and virtually all our issues that we brought forth.
