U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee (D-Flint)
MCUL and credit union attendees met with U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee. Alison Share,
Kildee’s legislative counsel and a former MCUL Federal Staffer of the Year, kicked
off the discussion with the group, as Kildee joined midway after returning from
House-called votes in the afternoon. Share and Kildee reaffirmed his strong sup-
port for credit unions’ not-for-profit tax status and his understanding of the value
that our communities see in return, including assistance for those affected by the
aforementioned UAW strike and government shutdown. Kildee’s support on these
issues is pivotal for Michigan, with his role on the House Ways and Means Committee
and his position on the majority caucus leadership. The congressman continues
to see the need to move the needle on consumer data security and agreed to help
credit unions in our conversations to find a pathway on smaller issues. The group
thanked him for his support and co-sponsorship of the SAFE Banking Act of 2019.
U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens (D-Rochester Hills)
MCUL and credit union attendees met with U.S. Rep. Haley Stevens. The group
began the meeting with her legislative assistant, Hannah Aiken, as Stevens joined
midway. The group discussed the credit union difference and the not-for-profit
tax status, and Stevens reaffirmed her strong support and appreciation for credit
unions’ work in their communities. She highlighted financial literacy as a success
area for credit unions and expressed a continuing desire to work with the industry
to promote financial literacy and job fair activities. The group thanked her for her
strong support and co-sponsorship of the SAFE Banking Act of 2019.
Credit Union House Reception With Tlaib and
U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow (D-Mich.)
After a long and successful day of visits on their first day of the trip, the full Hike
the Hill delegation convened for a reception at Credit Union House. Tlaib joined the
group for a second time that day and shared her positive view of credit unions based
on her own experiences with them and her knowledge of the work they do in the
communities she serves. Once again, she reaffirmed her support for credit unions’
not-for-profit tax status and pledged to work with us as our majority representative
on the U.S. House Committee on Financial Services. Afterward, U.S. Sen. Debbie
Stabenow arrived and reaffirmed her long-standing appreciation and support for
Michigan’s credit union industry. The group had the opportunity to discuss the credit
union not-for-profit tax status in more detail, as well as recent banker attacks to the
credit union model, data security and cannabis banking. Stabenow has been and
remains a committed supporter for credit unions on our issues.
U.S. Rep. Fred Upton (R-St. Joseph)
MCUL met with U.S. Rep. Fred Upton and had a great conversation about data
breaches and the importance of increasing data security/cybersecurity standards.
The team also chatted about the not-for-profit tax status, of which he continues to
be a supporter. The congressman had just met with Gov. Gretchen Whitmer in the
morning prior to our visit and spent a great deal of time talking about the budget
process at the federal level as well as in the state.
