Jim Nussle Gives Advocacy Forecast on MCUL’s Industry Call

icu2024On Oct. 17, nearly 120 Michigan credit union professionals gathered on the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL)'s monthly industry call, which lined up with International Credit Union (ICU) Day. MCUL welcomed America’s Credit Unions President/CEO Jim Nussle to the call to celebrate ICU Day and provide an update on MCUL’s national partners.

“We’ve been celebrating International Credit Union Day since 1948, and I’ve loved seeing everyone celebrating this week on social media, showing our unique status as cooperatives,” said MCUL CEO Patty Corkery before introducing Nussle.

On the upcoming national election, Nussle said that while the presidential election is a “dead heat,”regardless of the outcome, the national credit union movement has broadened its ability to reach out and elect people who are credit union supporters across all states.

“We have really targeted our communication with candidates, making sure that they are talking with us, that we're able to get them to reveal their positions on important credit union issues. And as a result, I believe, based on what we're seeing right now…we will have leaders in Congress in both the House and Senate that understand what a credit union is that can help us,” continued Nussle.

ACU’s CEO then gave attendees a forecast of what advocacy will look like next year. He listed a few priorities for the credit union movement, including fraud and the need for cybersecurity, attempts at fee income reform and the need to communicate the credit union difference — not only to policymakers so that they understand what a credit union is, he noted, but also to the public so that we can serve new members into the future.

Nussle complemented MCUL on always getting the credit union message out to consumers, but said, “We’ll have to do more of that, and we’ll have to do it together.”

Lastly, he challenged credit unions to think more about our cooperative principles, or cooperatives working cooperatively so we can solve issues together and grow as a collective.
