Northern Michigan Ice Storm Support – Update!
In late March, a devastating ice storm swept through Northern Michigan, leaving behind extreme ice accumulation, widespread power outages, downed trees, impassable roads and loss of critical communication services. In respond, Gov. Whitmer declared a state of emergency in 12 counties.
To support credit unions, employees and their volunteers in their time of need, the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) worked with the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF), to secure funds from CUAid, the Foundation’s disaster relief center. In total, more than 230 credit union employees and volunteers received over $270,000 in relief funds.
The NCUF has been involved with credit union disaster relief efforts for decades. The first major relief effort was in response to the Oklahoma City bombing in 1995, for which $1.4 million was raised to help credit union victim’s families. Since August 29, 2005 – when Hurricane Katrina struck America’s Gulf Coast – NCUF has become the credit union movement’s focal point for disaster relief. Following the Hurricane Katrina and Rita disaster relief efforts, CUAid was develop in cooperation with state foundation/league partners and America’s Credit Unions disaster preparedness committee. In addition, credit unions across Michigan joined forces to support the affected communities, and the MCUF launched a relief fund to provide $500 emergency grants to credit union members in impacted areas. Nearly $65,000 has been collected so far, funding more than 120 emergency grants.
MCUF is still accepting donations, and the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) created a set of social media tools to help credit unions raise awareness as well. By promoting the fund, credit unions can help bring additional support to Michigan families working to recover from this devastating storm.
