One Man’s 1,000-Mile Bike Ride Around Lake Michigan Raises $25,000 to Support Michigan Communities

atlThe Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) recently wrapped up an inspiring fundraiser, Around the Lake in Eight Days, that combined athletic endurance with community generosity.

Dr. Lamont Black of Wide Open Ventures cycled solo around Lake Michigan in just eight days, pedaling more than 1,000 miles. Along his route, he made stops in local communities, connecting with residents and organizations that rallied behind his effort.

His journey sparked attention not only for the physical challenge but also for the cause it supported. Thanks to the generosity of individuals, businesses and community organizations across Michigan, the fundraiser brought in more than $25,000. These funds will help MCUF expand programs that improve financial well-being for people, families and communities across the state.

The success of the campaign was boosted by donations from several Michigan-based organizations, including Genisys Credit Union, Michigan State University Federal Credit Union, PFCU, Marshall Community Credit Union, Peninsula Federal Credit Union, Monroe Community Credit Union, Consumers Credit Union, Soo Co-op Credit Union, Members First Credit Union, Vibe Credit Union, HarborLight Credit Union, Isabella Community Credit Union and the statewide young professionals’ group, FUELmi. Michigan Business Connection also contributed a significant $5,000 gift.

“This fundraiser was an incredible demonstration of endurance, generosity, and community spirit," said Andrea Tucker, MCUF Executive Director. “The funds raised will go directly toward helping Michigan credit unions strengthen financial well-being for members and communities across our state.”

“This fundraiser proves that it only takes one determined person to inspire change,” said Patty Corkery, President/CEO of the Michigan Credit Union League. “Lamont’s ride sparked incredible support, and we are deeply thankful to the many donors whose contributions will have a lasting impact on Michigan communities.”

Reflecting on his ride, Dr. Black shared, “Riding around Lake Michigan in eight days was an incredible personal challenge. But it was also an opportunity to bring attention to the important work of credit unions. I’m honored to have partnered with MCUF to support financial well-being and to know that every mile contributed to making a difference in people’s lives.”

MCUF extends its gratitude to Dr. Black and all who contributed to making this event a success.
