LAFCU Honored with Award in Mathematics
LAFCU Chief Financial Officer Leslie Rorie has been recognized with the 2025 Real McCoy Award for her achievements in mathematics and contributions to the STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics and Medicine) community.
Rorie was nominated by a past honoree for her work in STEMM and her active participation in the field. She was formally honored during the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program (DAPCEP) Real McCoy Awards, presented by DTE Energy on Thursday, Sept. 25, at DTE Energy Corporate Headquarters in Detroit.
“Being honored with the prestigious Real McCoy Award highlights not only Leslie’s professional accomplishments but also the positive impact she has made through her work,” said Patrick Spyke, LAFCU CEO. “Her journey from an early interest in math to becoming CFO at LAFCU shows young people how developing skills in STEMM can lead to meaningful opportunities and leadership roles. She embodies LAFCU’s desire to help the next generation see how education can empower them to lead and serve.”
Founded in 2012, the Real McCoy Awards recognize outstanding leaders in STEMM who demonstrate excellence in their fields and a commitment to inspiring the next generation. The award is named for Elijah McCoy, the African American mechanical engineer and Detroiter whose invention of the lubricator for steam engines became known as the “Real McCoy.”
“This recognition is an incredible honor,” Rorie said. “To be acknowledged among so many leaders in STEMM is both humbling and inspiring. I am grateful to those who paved the way before me, and I hope to serve as that same inspiration for the next generation of innovators and dreamers.”
The Real McCoy Awards are part of DAPCEP’s mission to increase the number of historically underrepresented students who are prepared and motivated to pursue careers in STEMM. Through supplemental K-12 education programs, DAPCEP works to expand access and create pathways for future STEMM leaders.
