LAFCU Hosts Shred Day to Help Protect Community Members from Identity Theft

As tax season prompts many people to sort through old financial records and paperwork, disposing of sensitive documents safely becomes an important step in preventing identity theft. Credit unions are uniquely positioned to help address this risk through community-focused initiatives like LAFCU’s annual Shred Day.

LAFCU will host its free Shred Day on Saturday, April 25, at its headquarters/West Lansing Branch, 106 N. Marketplace Blvd., Lansing. A mobile shredding truck will be on site from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. to securely destroy confidential documents for community members.

Millions of Americans experience identity theft each year, often as a result of personal or financial information being improperly discarded. Shred Day offers a secure, convenient solution by ensuring sensitive materials are safely shredded rather than thrown away.

Community members are encouraged to bring items such as old tax documents, receipts, bills, insurance statements, address labels, and financial records that include account numbers, Social Security numbers, or other identifying information. Each participant may drop off up to four banker’s boxes.

“Tax season is a natural time for people to go through important paperwork and determine what they no longer need,” said Alyssa Troub, LAFCU’s digital marketing and community engagement specialist. “Shred Day offers a simple, secure way to dispose of those documents while helping protect against identity theft and providing peace of mind.”

Events like Shred Day highlight how credit unions can create meaningful community impact beyond traditional financial services. By offering practical support during a high-risk time of year, credit unions help strengthen trust, promote financial well-being and demonstrate the people-helping-people philosophy at the core of the cooperative model.
