Try a Credit Union's Protect What Matters Campaign Offers Cybersecurity Resources
As October marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the Michigan Credit Union League (MCUL) is highlighting new tools and resources to help credit unions educate members, promote safer online habits and strengthen cybersecurity preparedness.
With scams and cyber threats continuing to evolve, credit unions play an important role in helping members recognize potential risks and protect their personal and financial information. Fraud prevention and cybersecurity will also remain key advocacy priorities for MCUL heading into 2027.
Protect What Matters: Consumer Education Campaign
As part of its statewide Try a Credit Union awareness initiative, MCUL recently launched Protect What Matters, a consumer education campaign focused on fraud prevention and digital safety.
The campaign connects the everyday things people work to protect, from their homes and cars to their families, with the importance of safeguarding personal information. Through short videos, digital advertising, social media graphics, podcast messages and outdoor advertising, the campaign shares practical tips for recognizing scams, avoiding suspicious links, creating strong passwords and monitoring financial accounts.
The initiative also reinforces the value of having a trusted financial partner to turn to when questions or concerns arise.
Michigan credit unions are encouraged to help extend the campaign's reach by downloading and sharing available graphics and educational materials through their own communication channels.

Additional Cybersecurity Resources for Credit Unions
Beyond the Protect What Matters campaign, several resources are available to support credit unions' cybersecurity education and preparedness efforts.
AACUL Cybersecurity Awareness Toolkit
The American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL) has released a fully customizable cybersecurity communications toolkit, sponsored by Envisant and the Illinois Credit Union League. The toolkit provides ready-to-use materials credit unions can use to educate members about common cyber threats, encourage safer online habits and help protect personal information.

NCUA Automated Cybersecurity Evaluation Toolbox (ACET)
The National Credit Union Administration's ACET application provides credit unions with a voluntary tool to assess their cybersecurity preparedness, identify potential risks and measure progress over time.
The assessment is available to institutions of all sizes and does not introduce new regulatory requirements or expectations. Credit unions can use the tool to better understand their cyber risk exposure and make informed decisions about their security programs.

As cybersecurity threats continue to evolve, MCUL encourages Michigan credit unions to take advantage of these resources and continue helping members stay informed, vigilant and protected.
